I stepped back slightly, and Lillian took my hand.
“Ruth tells me great things about you, Tony. I will help refine your knowledge and techniques. Are you happy to proceed with me?” she said as I detected a slight northern Irish accent.
I looked at Ruth, she signified agreement with a nod. I looked Lillian in the eye.
“Yes, Lillian. What do we need to do?” I asked.
“I have a place in Leeson Street for a week,” she said. “As you can probably tell from my accent, I’m not from Dublin.”
“I can tell, Lillian. I like your accent.”
“Thank you, Tony. What’s your schedule, timewise? I’m available to you at all times. You just let me know when and I’ll facilitate you,” she said, “morning, noon or night.”
“I work just around the corner in Fitzwilliam Street. I start at 9:00 and finish at 5:00 with an hour for lunch. I have weekends off too,” I said quickly.
“Very good. Does tomorrow at 10:00 suit?” she asked. “We can get a lot done without interruption.”
“That sounds perfect,” I said. “Where do I go?”
“I’ll text you the address in a few minutes,” she said.
“Grand. I’d best get back to work then, thanks for everything, Ruth, and I’ll see you soon, I hope.”
I went to her and kissed her. She pulled me into a hug, and I whispered in her ear.
“I love you. Can’t wait for our date.”
She touched my face and kissed me. I was sad but a little intrigued as I left the house. I got to the office a little after 1:00 and headed straight to the canteen. Smithser was there talking to someone on his phone. I didn’t know who he was talking to, but I assumed it was a female, as he said with his trademark little smirk, “Well, they say size isn’t everything, love. If you know how to use it.”
A murmured response scrambled from the phone.
